Hello springtime. Winter’s chill has faded away, the days are growing warmer and longer – and Sydney is really starting to sparkle once again. Yep, the crisp blue skies and warm sunshine are pretty damn magical, aren’t they?
Picnic blankets are being unfurled. Alfresco weekend lunches and garden barbecues are being planned. Eskies are being dusted off. The magpies are swooping (which is both charming and a little scary now and then). And all over Sydney’s lower north shore (and beyond, of course), gardens are bursting back to life, with new shoots and flowers aplenty. As horticulturists and gardeners, this is our favourite time of the year. Conditions are just perfect for gardening; not too hot, not too cold – and a little sun shower now and then never hurt anyone. Well that’s our ethos!
Even the wattle is out – right on time! Golden, floofy and just so lovely, the sight of wattle in full bloom is a truly stunning display. And did you know wattle is actually rather tough as well as pretty? In fact, many varieties have adapted to thrive after fire, with seeds needing heat to germinate. And this makes them one of the first plants to bloom within recovering landscapes. Wattle is a reminder of renewal, regeneration and the beauty of natural resilience.
So, happy spring and happy wattle sightings, nature lovers! Time to toss the winter woollies aside and get out into the garden and beyond, exploring our parks and local bushwalking tracks. Adventure and beauty await.
